Surah Al-Ikhlas is considered the most important surah in the Quran due to its comprehensive articulation of Tawhid (the Oneness of God). While comprising only four verses, it’s equivalent to one-third of the Quran in significance. This is because the foundation of Islam is Tawhid, and Surah Al-Ikhlas encapsulates this concept in its purest form, making it the core root of the faith. The observance of fasting on the 9th and 10th of Muharram is a recommended practice, not obligatory. This practice originated when the Prophet Muhammad learned that the Jews of Medina fasted on the 10th of Muharram to commemorate their deliverance from Pharaoh. The Prophet stated that the Muslims have a greater right to Moses than the Jews, and thus instructed his companions to fast on the 9th and 10th of Muharram instead, to differentiate their practice. This was done even before Ramadan fasting was made obligatory. The intention was to establish a distinct practice, fasting for two days instead of one.
The Prophet Muhammad’s life exemplified a perfect balance between fulfilling obligations to people and devotion to God. He showed immense love and attention to his wives, ensuring their emotional well-being and rights were always met. Simultaneously, at the call to prayer, he would immediately and completely devote himself to worship, appearing as if unaware of his surroundings. This demonstrates a harmonious integration of worldly responsibilities and spiritual pursuits, highlighting the importance of both aspects of a balanced life. His behavior showed complete dedication to both rights of God and rights of people, a perfect example for all believers.
This lecture discusses the concept of *shirk-e-khafi* (subtle idolatry), which is more insidious than overt *shirk*. It explains how actions performed to gain the approval of others, even during religious practices like prayer, constitute a form of hidden idolatry. The speaker illustrates this with an example of prolonging prostration in prayer when observed by others, intending to display piety rather than solely seeking God’s pleasure. It emphasizes that hostility towards a friend of God is equivalent to declaring war against God Himself. The discussion highlights that true spiritual pain arises from causing hurt to those with sensitive hearts, and that hurting a *Wali Allah* brings shame and disgrace upon an entire community. The lecture stresses that genuine love for God is reflected in compassion and care for His devoted servants, and that inflicting pain on them invites divine retribution. The core message is that harming those close to God brings about spiritual and communal ruin.
