Surah Al-Asr is among the shortest chapters of the Quran, consisting of only three verses. It is also among the earliest revealed chapters. The Quranic style, as described in Surah Hud, is to first establish firm principles and then elaborate upon them, originating from the All-Wise, All-Knowing. The unstoppable surge following the Prophet Muhammad's mission could not be contained by any earthly power. Neither Persian swords nor Roman legions could halt its advance. Hazrat Khalid bin Walid declared to the Romans that their numbers and weaponry were irrelevant; they faced a people who embraced death as eagerly as others cherished life. This nation’s strength stemmed from a desire for martyrdom, not worldly possessions or kingdoms. No force could defeat a people motivated by faith and the promise of eternal reward.

The observance of fasting on the 9th and 10th of Muharram is a recommended practice, not obligatory. This practice originated when the Prophet Muhammad learned that the Jews of Medina fasted on the 10th of Muharram to commemorate their deliverance from Pharaoh. The Prophet stated that the Muslims have a greater right to Moses than the Jews, and thus instructed his companions to fast on the 9th and 10th of Muharram instead, to differentiate their practice. This was done even before Ramadan fasting was made obligatory. The intention was to establish a distinct practice, fasting for two days instead of one.

Magheera bin Shuba, a prominent companion, advised Muawiya R.A. to designate a successor. He pointed out that the previous conflicts had decimated a large portion of the Muslim community, and the original companions were diminishing. The new Muslims, those who converted after the conquests or following the revelation of Surah At-Tawbah, lacked the strong tribal affiliations that had previously maintained central authority. Magheera warned that without the backing of a powerful tribe, the system of the Caliphate would not remain unified. Muawiya initially hesitated but ultimately understood the necessity of appointing Yazid as his heir. It's important to note that disagreement with Muawiya's decision is permissible, but questioning his intentions is not, given his status as a companion of the Prophet.

True prayer transcends ritual; it’s a direct communion with God, achieving a spiritual ascent akin to *mi'raj*. This lecture emphasizes that the essence of prayer lies in a conscious awareness of God’s presence and heartfelt submission. Without this spiritual awakening, even diligent performance of obligatory prayers remains incomplete. The speaker stresses that a dormant or ‘dead’ soul cannot experience this profound connection. According to revealed scriptures, the gravest sin is usury (interest). Shirk (associating partners with God) is unpardonable. The Quran states God does not forgive associating partners with Him, but forgives lesser sins to whomever He wills. Usury, declared as warfare by God and His Messenger, has become central to modern economic systems like banking and capitalism.
