Companions of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) expressed their distress regarding increasing hardships. The Prophet (peace be upon him) reminded them that previous followers of Islam faced even greater trials, including being burned alive, buried alive, and dismembered. He emphasized the importance of patience and perseverance, stating that trials are a test from God and that relief will come in due time. He cautioned against impatience and assured them that enduring hardship is a characteristic of true believers.
The observance of fasting on the 9th and 10th of Muharram is a recommended practice. It originated from the Prophet Muhammad’s desire to distinguish the Muslims from the Jewish community of Medina, who fasted on the 10th of Muharram commemorating their liberation from Pharaoh. The Prophet, acknowledging a stronger connection to Moses, instructed his companions to fast for two days – the 9th and 10th – instead of one. While not obligatory, this practice holds significance as a voluntary act of worship and a demonstration of the Muslim community's unique identity.
The text details the events of the Battle of Karbala. Twenty families from the Banu Hashim clan fought bravely alongside Imam Hussain, sacrificing their lives. The battle saw intense fighting, with many from the Banu Hashim martyred. A young child of Imam Hussain was also among the martyrs. All male members of Imam Hussain's household were killed except for his son, Ali Zayn al-Abidin, who was ill and unable to participate. This occurred in 61 AH, exactly fifty years after the passing of the Prophet Muhammad.
