Every individual must establish this internal scale to evaluate their spiritual state and prioritize devotion over material attachments. The observance of fasting on the 9th and 10th of Muharram is a recommended practice, not obligatory. This practice originated from a desire to distinguish Muslims from the Jewish community of Medina, who fasted on the 10th of Muharram commemorating their liberation from Pharaoh. The Prophet Muhammad, acknowledging a greater connection to Moses, instructed his companions to fast for two days – the 9th and 10th – to differentiate their practice. This was before the obligatory fast of Ramadan was established. The fast serves as a voluntary act of worship with historical and communal significance.

To achieve any goal, one must control their base instincts and desires. Without self-discipline, life is reduced to a mere animalistic existence. A true human is defined by purpose, striving, hard work, sacrifice, and enduring hardship. Those who live without a defined purpose simply have life pass them by, falling below even the level of animals. The Quran, in Surah A'raf, compares such individuals to livestock, and even worse, as animals are created for a specific purpose, while these individuals squander their human potential.
