The absence of genuine faith and the prevalence of mere ritualistic observance represent a significant decline in spiritual understanding. This concept, explored by Imam Ghazali, highlights a dangerous shift where individuals perform religious duties without internalizing their meaning or experiencing a connection with Allah. Such individuals may outwardly adhere to practices like Salat, Sawm, Zakat, and Hajj, but lack the sincerity and presence of heart necessary for true worship. This leads to a form of hypocrisy, where actions are performed for worldly recognition or to avoid criticism, rather than out of love for Allah. The Quran condemns those who offer charity only to show off and fail to assist those in genuine need. True faith requires khushu’ – humility and attentiveness in prayer – and a deep understanding of the divine message. The degeneration of prayer into a mere formality, devoid of spiritual essence, is a sign of this decline. A focus on outward appearance over inner sincerity ultimately diminishes the value of religious practice.
