The Year of the Elephant, known as ‘Aam al-Fil’, marks a significant event preceding the birth of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). Abraha, a Christian governor of Yemen, sought to divert pilgrimage from the Kaaba in Mecca to a newly built church in Sana’a. His army, including elephants, marched towards Mecca intending to destroy the Kaaba. However, Allah miraculously intervened, sending flocks of birds—believed to be ababil—carrying small stones that resembled pebbles. These stones, propelled with considerable velocity, decimated Abraha’s army, protecting the sacred House of Allah. This event is described in Surah Al-Fil in the Quran. Accounts vary regarding the precise date of the Prophet’s birth, with some traditions placing it fifty days after the Year of the Elephant, while others state it occurred on the same day. This miraculous preservation is intrinsically linked to the birth of the final prophet and represents a divine sign of protection.
