During the days of Hajj, the Prophet Muhammad encountered six individuals from the Khazraj tribe. These men had heard rumors from Jewish communities that the final prophet would appear among them and that they would ultimately defeat their enemies. They had consistently lost conflicts with Jewish communities. When invited to Islam by the Prophet, they recognized the fulfillment of these prophecies and immediately accepted the faith, fearing being left behind when the Jews converted. This event demonstrates the power of divine guidance and the swift acceptance of truth by those destined to believe.
The human soul inherently possesses two crucial elements: divine knowledge ('ma'rifat-e-Rabbani') and divine love ('mohabbat-e-Rabbani'). These are present as a radiant light and inner warmth, often obscured by layers of heedlessness, desire, ego, and pride. These obscuring layers deepen with increased indulgence in worldly desires or the development of arrogance, concealing the soul's innate connection to the divine. Removing these layers reveals the glowing ember of spiritual awareness and affection already within.
The observance of fasting on the 9th and 10th of Muharram is a recommended practice, not obligatory. This practice originated when the Prophet Muhammad learned that the Jews of Medina fasted on the 10th of Muharram to commemorate their deliverance from Pharaoh. The Prophet, affirming a greater connection to Moses, instructed his companions to fast for two days – the 9th and 10th – to distinguish the Muslim practice from that of the Jews. This two-day fast signifies a deliberate divergence from the Jewish tradition, while simultaneously honoring the historical event and recognizing the importance of Moses.
This lecture clarifies that sustenance, despite all effort—farming, labor, protection of harvest, and processing—is fundamentally a blessing from Allah. It emphasizes that while humans exert effort, the actual provision is divine grace, differing from merit-based reward. True reward (qasab) applies to actions judged by morality; good or evil. Sustenance, however, is a gift given without expectation of deserving it, highlighting its status as a divine blessing.
