Everything in the heavens and the earth glorifies Allah. While praising Allah is essential – as even inanimate objects and plants do – humanity, granted stewardship of the earth and divine favor, is obligated to do more. True faith demands action: actively striving to establish divine guidance and elevate the word of God. Simply reciting praise is insufficient; believers must demonstrate their commitment through dedicated effort and sacrifice to make God’s will prevail. The core requirement of faith in God is not just glorification, but actively working to establish His dominion and uplift His message.
The observance of fasting on the 9th and 10th of Muharram is a recommended practice, not obligatory. This practice originated from a desire to distinguish Muslims from the Jewish community of Medina, who fasted on the 10th of Muharram commemorating their liberation from Pharaoh. The Prophet Muhammad, acknowledging a greater connection to Moses, instructed his companions to fast for two days – the 9th and 10th – to differentiate their practice. This was before the obligatory fast of Ramadan was established. The fast serves as a voluntary act of worship with historical and communal significance.
This lecture explains the process of self-purification (Tazkiya-e-Nafs) using the analogy of a gardener tending to a garden. Just as weeds hinder the growth of plants by consuming vital nutrients and water, negative traits and obstacles impede human spiritual development. The gardener actively removes these impediments to allow the desired plants to flourish. Similarly, Tazkiya involves identifying and eliminating the internal barriers that prevent true growth and realizing one’s potential. This process is essential for achieving genuine spiritual progress.
The speaker illustrates the difference between accepting information based on consensus and achieving genuine belief through personal experience. Just as someone unfamiliar with sugar relies on the testimony of others, true faith requires internal verification. Until one’s ‘test bits’ – internal faculties – are active and functioning, genuine certainty remains elusive. This lecture emphasizes that belief is not merely intellectual assent, but a state attained through lived experience and internal confirmation.
Human beings can attain knowledge of fundamental truths about the universe through their innate nature (sound disposition) and sound intellect, without requiring external revelation. A pure nature, free from corruption, combined with an intellect unburdened by arrogance or prejudice, allows one to perceive the existence of a Creator. This Creator possesses all attributes of perfection, is free from all flaws, and is the ultimate Sustainer. This inherent understanding arises from self-reflection and rational thought, guiding individuals to recognize the divine through their own faculties.
The Prophet Muhammad’s life exemplified a perfect balance between fulfilling obligations to people and devotion to God. He showed immense love and attention to his wives, ensuring their emotional well-being and rights were always met. Simultaneously, at the call to prayer, he would immediately and completely devote himself to worship, appearing as if unaware of his surroundings. This demonstrates a harmonious integration of worldly responsibilities and spiritual pursuits, highlighting the importance of both aspects of a balanced life. His behavior showed complete dedication to both rights of God and rights of people, a perfect example for all believers.
